How the word counter works

Everything runs entirely in your browser — your text is never uploaded to a server. As you type or paste, the counter recalculates instantly. Words are counted by splitting your text on spaces and line breaks; characters are counted both with and without spaces so you can meet strict limits like a Twitter/X post or an SMS message. Sentences are detected by terminal punctuation (. ! ?) and paragraphs by blank lines between blocks of text.

Reading and speaking time

Reading time assumes an average silent reading speed of about 200 words per minute, which is typical for adult readers of general-audience text. Speaking time assumes about 130 words per minute, a comfortable pace for presentations and voiceovers. Both are estimates — dense or technical material reads more slowly, and skimming reads faster.

Why word count matters

Many kinds of writing come with hard or soft length limits. Academic essays and assignments often specify a word range. Meta descriptions for SEO should stay near 150–160 characters. Social posts have strict character caps. Blog posts frequently target 1,000–2,000 words for search visibility. Knowing your counts as you write helps you hit the target without padding or cutting at the last minute.
