120+ phrasal verbs with examples β flashcard, list, and quiz modes
A phrasal verb is a verb combined with one or two particles (a preposition, an adverb, or both) that together create a meaning different from the original verb. For example, "give up" means to quit, which is very different from the verb "give." Phrasal verbs are extremely common in spoken and informal written English.
Separable phrasal verbs allow a noun object between the verb and the particle: "turn the music down" or "turn down the music." With pronouns, the object must go in the middle: "turn it down" (not "turn down it"). Inseparable phrasal verbs must keep the verb and particle together: "look after the children" (not "look the children after").
Learn phrasal verbs in context, not just as word pairs. Read the example sentence aloud several times. Group them by base verb (all the "get" ones together) to spot patterns. Use them in your own sentences immediately β the more you use them actively, the faster they stick. Our quiz mode reinforces recognition; the flashcard mode reinforces recall.
