Most people study by reading the same material over and over until it feels familiar. It's comfortable, and it barely works. Decades of research in cognitive psychology point to two techniques that dramatically outperform re-reading: active recall (testing yourself instead of reviewing) and spaced repetition (reviewing at expanding intervals). Together they let you remember more while spending less total time. Here's why, and how to use them.
The forgetting curve
In the 1880s, psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus mapped how quickly we forget newly learned information. His "forgetting curve" showed that memory decays rapidly at first — you might lose more than half of new material within a day or two — and then levels off. Crucially, each time you successfully recall something just as you're about to forget it, the curve resets and flattens: the memory decays more slowly the next time. Space your reviews to catch the material near the bottom of that curve and each review does far more work.
Why active recall beats re-reading
Re-reading creates a feeling of knowing — the words look familiar — without building the ability to retrieve the information when you need it. Active recall flips this. When you force yourself to produce the answer from memory (a flashcard, a practice question, explaining a concept aloud), you strengthen the retrieval pathway itself. This "testing effect" is one of the most robust findings in learning science: students who self-test consistently outperform those who spend the same time re-reading, often by a wide margin.
The discomfort is the point. If recalling something feels effortful, that effort is exactly what cements it. Easy, passive review feels productive but leaves little behind.
How spacing works in practice
The idea is to review each item just before you'd forget it, then wait longer before the next review. A simple, effective schedule for a new fact looks like this:
- Review 1: the same day you learn it
- Review 2: the next day
- Review 3: about 3 days later
- Review 4: about 1 week later
- Review 5: about 2 weeks later
- Review 6: about 1 month later
Each successful recall roughly doubles the interval to the next one. Items you get wrong reset to a short interval; items you find easy stretch out quickly. Spaced-repetition apps automate this scheduling, but the principle works with paper cards and a calendar too — the algorithm is far less important than actually spacing your reviews at all.
Putting it together
- Turn material into questions. A page of notes becomes a stack of prompts, each testing one idea. One fact per card keeps recall clean.
- Always answer before flipping. Commit to a real attempt — even a wrong one — before you check. The attempt is what builds memory.
- Sort by difficulty. Push easy items to long intervals; bring difficult ones back soon. Don't waste time reviewing what you already know cold.
- Study a little, often. Fifteen minutes daily beats a three-hour marathon the night before. Spacing requires spreading sessions out.
- Interleave topics. Mixing related subjects in one session, rather than blocking them, improves your ability to tell them apart and recall them later.
